Mama Bear Midwifery

Julie Carlson, CNM, LM, MSW

I became a midwife because I want health care to be a positive, empowering, and transformative experience. Whether it be a check-up or home birth, we all have the right to be treated with compassion, respect and as the leader of our care.

I am a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) and am a Licensed Midwife (LM) in NYS. I graduated from nurse midwifery school at the University of California, San Francisco Nurse Midwifery program in 2007.

After  I graduated, I worked in a hospital based practice in the Navajo Nation, then a private practice in Albuquerque, NM then another practice in CNY. I opened my home birth practice in June, 2015. I chose to work in the hospital at the beginning of my career so that I could bring the midwifery model of care to as many clients as possible. I am very appreciative of the diverse experiences I have had in the hospital setting which have ranged from "home-like" natural birth experiences to caring for clients with high-risk pregnancies. I moved to home birth to support a wider variety of birthing options for families. I also wanted to have more quality time with clients and also be with a client from the beginning of the pregnancy through birth and into the postpartum period.

In my years of practice I have had the honor of attending over 600 births and over 1,000 labors. I have performed 200+ newborn exams and can't even begin to count how many women I have counseled about breastfeeding and postpartum wellness.

Along with Midwifery, I have a passion for martial arts, yoga, the outdoors,

gardening and the healing power of plants. I began learning about herbalism in midwifery school and have continued to explore plant medicine ever since. I am grateful to my ancestors, community, midwife elders, family, and friends who have supported me along my path.

Debra Alt, Midwife Assistant

Being an assistant to a NYS Licensed Midwife  requires a commitment to a flexible

and often unpredictable lifestyle. With a busy family of four beautiful children, this could not be accomplished without the support and understanding of my husband and extended family. I have no doubt of my calling to do this work and that my faith in God keeps me going strong.

As a lifelong resident of Madison County, NY, I am a Childbirth Educator through Avivia Institute of Midwifery, and welcome opportunities to educate, support and encourage women in their birth choices . As a Childbirth Doula, I offer support during pregnancy and in hospital settings. As an assistant (since 2010) to Meredith Geers, CNM and other Midwives, I bring an additional 18+yrs of nursing experience as well as my doula skills.

I am certified in Neonatal Resuscitation and Adult CPR and have completed course work in Birth Emergency Skills Training as well as the Midwife Assistant course through Birthjoy. In 2016 I completed a program of Certification In Midwifery as a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) through Womancraft Midwifery Education Program of Amherst, MA.
